PC gamers are driving a massive shift in the gaming industry by purchasing significantly more games priced under $30 at launch compared to their PlayStation and Xbox counterparts, according to a recent report by analyst firm Newzoo.

The Rise of the Sub-$30 Market
While the $30 to $50 price bracket remains a leader across all platforms, the under-$30 segment is thriving uniquely on PC, fueled by a steady stream of breakout indie titles. This trend is not merely a byproduct of recurring Steam sales; it represents a fundamental change in how PC players allocate their budgets, with the segment growing year after year as viral hits continue to emerge.
PC vs. Consoles: A Spending Disparity
Data from 2022 to present shows that while PC, PlayStation, and Xbox saw comparable percentage growth in total sub-$30 game sales—40%, 50%, and 35% respectively—the actual spending patterns tell a different story. On consoles, this price bracket is dominated by back-catalog titles. In contrast, the PC market is aggressively adopting new releases in this range, with sales of new sub-$30 PC games surging by 156% since 2022.
Steam’s Role in Market Dominance
The discoverability power of Steam plays a pivotal role in this disparity. For instance, in 2025 revenue reports, while staples like Minecraft and Dead by Daylight performed well across all platforms, PC saw unique dominance from titles like Peak, REPO, and Schedule 1. On consoles, Minecraft continues to dwarf other titles in this bracket, whereas on PC, it faces stiff competition from emerging viral hits, suggesting that the console market for these games is significantly smaller and less diverse.
Why Indies Prefer the PC Ecosystem
The report, which covers markets in the US, UK, Germany, France, Spain, and Italy, highlights that many viral hits—such as the drug-dealing simulator Schedule 1—are PC-exclusive. These titles consistently perform better on Steam, leading developers to prioritize PC launches. Many of these games never reach consoles, where indie titles often struggle to gain the same level of visibility and traction.
A Shifting Landscape for New Releases
Newzoo concludes that sub-$30 new releases are actively reshaping the PC market, capturing an increasing share of player spending. In 2025, these new, affordable releases accounted for 9% of total PC spending. This trend is backed by a history of massive hits, including 2024’s Palworld, Path of Exile 2, Sons of the Forest, and TCG Card Shop Simulator, as well as 2023’s breakout successes like Lethal Company, BattleBit Remastered, and Dave the Diver.
Many of these titles originate as Early Access projects from small teams, often sparking entirely new genre trends that are incubated and popularized within the Steam ecosystem.
