The acclaimed Zombicide board game franchise has officially returned from the dead with Zombicide: Dead Men Tales, a swashbuckling pirate-themed spinoff currently shattering crowdfunding records on Gamefound.

A Franchise Resurrected
This nautical revival marks the series’ comeback following a tumultuous period for its previous publisher, CMON, which faced significant financial headwinds last year. Industry powerhouse Asmodee stepped in to secure the franchise’s future, leading to this new iteration. Fans have responded with immediate enthusiasm: the project is already more than 490% funded. The involvement of veteran studio Fantasy Flight Games has further bolstered confidence in this high-seas adventure.

New Mechanics on the High Seas
While maintaining the core combat-heavy, cooperative gameplay for one to six players, Dead Men Tales introduces fresh mechanics tailored to its pirate setting. Players can navigate modular boards by swinging from ship rigging, utilize cannons to decimate larger threats, and hunt for buried treasure. The game also introduces “Grom”—a grog-like substance that provides temporary buffs alongside tactical drawbacks. Adding to the tension, undead foes can now emerge from beneath the waves, forcing players to adapt to unpredictable enemy spawns.
Building on a Proven Legacy
The original Zombicide remains a gold standard for cooperative board games, earning a 4.5/5 rating in our 2nd Edition review. By branching into thematic variations—similar to the 2023 Wild West release Zombicide: Undead or Alive—the series continues to innovate beyond the standard modern-day zombie apocalypse. This creative pivot ensures the gameplay loop remains engaging for long-time veterans.

Crowdfunding Perks and Availability
The current Gamefound campaign offers more than just the base game. Backers can secure the upcoming Zombicide: Plaguebearer tabletop RPG and associated graphic novels alongside their pledge. While a retail release date for Dead Men Tales remains unconfirmed, the crowdfunding platform is currently the only way to guarantee early access to these items.
For those looking to jump into the series immediately, several existing titles are available via Amazon, though prices vary significantly. Notably, the Batman-themed DCeased: Gotham City Outbreak is currently available for $16.23.
