Epic Games has officially launched its Star Wars toolkit for the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN), allowing creators to build bespoke Star Wars-themed islands using a massive library of official assets, vehicles, and characters.

The update marks a significant shift in Fortnite’s evolution, moving from limited-time crossovers to providing a robust platform for user-generated Star Wars experiences. Players can now explore everything from high-stakes battles on frozen planets to complex business simulations involving droids.

Expanding the Galaxy Through UGC
Andre Balta, senior director at Epic Games, notes that the move was a direct response to the developer community’s passion. “Our team decided to take all those amazing weapons, assets, vehicles, and characters, and expose them to our Fortnite development community,” Balta says. The goal is to establish Fortnite as the home for the largest collection of official Star Wars experiences.
To celebrate the launch, Epic Games and Lucasfilm collaborated with three creators to produce “exemplar islands” that set a high benchmark for what is possible within the toolset.

The Strategic Vision Behind the Tools
Sean Shoptaw, executive VP of Disney Games and Digital Entertainment, views the integration as a vital step in modern storytelling. “Games offer a uniquely powerful way to deepen engagement and expand our worlds,” Shoptaw explains. This partnership signals a broader industry trend where traditional development paths are increasingly complemented by giving players the tools to create their own entertainment.

Inside the ‘Droid Tycoon’ Experience
Among the standout projects is *Droid Tycoon*, developed by the studio Future Trash (operating as FOAD). The game tasks players with building, selling, and managing droids. Kevin Marciano, co-founder of Future Trash, highlights that while Epic provided the core Star Wars assets, his team went a step further.
“There are no droid assets in the toolkit,” says creative director Scott Ulliman. “FOAD made all of them itself.” The studio created 42 unique droids for the launch, with 10 more planned for future updates. The decision to focus on droids—often overlooked in favor of lightsabers and starfighters—was born from a genuine passion for the franchise’s deeper lore.

The Future of UEFN Development
The success of these islands highlights the shifting landscape of game development. While some observers argue that these experiences feel like “ghostly imitations” of larger-scale games, for the Fortnite-native audience, they provide a deep, engaging way to interact with the Star Wars universe.

For studios like Future Trash, working within UEFN has become a primary focus. Even as they maintain their own original projects, the ability to build within the Star Wars ecosystem has provided a unique opportunity to contribute to one of the most recognizable franchises in entertainment.
