Polymath is transforming mathematics education into an immersive gaming experience, leveraging gamified mechanics to boost student engagement across the U.S. and international markets.
Gamifying Critical Thinking
The platform integrates math directly into its gameplay loop. Christian Silver, co-founder and CTO, explains that the game challenges students to identify errors in real-world scenarios. “There’s a shopkeeper where you can buy things like resources, and sometimes that shopkeeper is unreliable and will give you the wrong price. Each block of wood costs 5 ‘cubos’ (the in-game currency). You’re asking to buy four, but the shopkeeper tries to charge you 30. That’s a critical thinking moment for the student to recognize the price is wrong,” Silver says.
Classroom Integration and Oversight
Polymath offers distinct experiences for home and school environments. The classroom version provides teachers with real-time monitoring tools, allowing students to collaborate in a shared virtual space. For classrooms with limited hardware, the game features a rotating turn-based system, ensuring every student remains involved in the problem-solving process.
Parental Controls and Safety
For home users, the platform provides parents with the Polymath Relate app, which offers granular insights into a child’s progress and detailed breakdowns of every question answered. Weekly email reports keep parents updated on performance metrics. While the game allows children to connect with friends via unique codes, the developers have deliberately excluded chat functions to prioritize safety in multiplayer modes.
Global Growth and Future Roadmap
Since its January 2023 launch via the Startmate accelerator in New Zealand, Polymath has scaled rapidly. It now serves thousands of users across several U.S. states—including Arizona, California, Florida, Texas, and Virginia—as well as Australia, New Zealand, and the U.K.
Looking ahead, the team plans to expand the curriculum to include advanced learning modules and deeper collaborative play features. The company is also exploring new revenue streams, including the introduction of purchasable avatar assets.
Polymath is currently free to play on the web, iOS, and Android devices.
