Discord Launches New SDK to Supercharge In-Game Social Play

Discord officially launched its Discord Social SDK on Monday, providing developers with a free, robust toolkit designed to integrate the platform’s social infrastructure directly into third-party games. This new resource enables creators to enhance multiplayer experiences and social connectivity for all players, regardless of whether they have an existing Discord account.

Seamless Social Connectivity and Invites

The integration introduces a unified friends list, allowing players to synchronize their Discord connections with their in-game social circles. This bridge makes it significantly easier for users to maintain contact across different environments. Additionally, the SDK features deep-linked game invites, enabling players to pull friends directly into their active lobbies or parties with a single click.

Advanced Communication Tools

The toolkit focuses heavily on communication, offering cross-platform messaging that keeps players connected across desktop, console, and mobile devices. Developers can also implement features that link in-game chats to specific Discord servers and channels, alongside native voice chat capabilities.

Supporting Game Growth and Retention

“For game creators from indie to AAA, Discord is where you can connect with the world’s largest and most engaged community of players to fuel the growth of your game before, during, and after launch,” Discord co-founder and CTO Stan Vishnevskiy stated. He emphasized that in an era where game discovery and retention are critical metrics, the SDK provides a vital link to reach gamers where they spend their time.

Early Adoption and Technical Compatibility

Several prominent studios have already adopted the toolkit, including Theorycraft Games, Facepunch Studios, 1047 Games, Scopely, Mainframe Industries, Elodie Games, and Tencent Games. Currently, the Discord Social SDK is compatible with C++, Unreal Engine, and Unity, with support for Windows 11+ and macOS. Discord confirmed that support for console and mobile platforms is currently in development.

The launch comes as Discord continues to solidify its position as a gaming hub, boasting more than 200 million monthly active users who collectively spend over 1.5 billion hours playing games on PC each month.
