Mouse: PI For Hire, launching April 16 on PC and consoles, is a thrilling first-person shooter that transcends its striking 1930s rubberhose animation to deliver one of the most polished and satisfying combat experiences in years. Developed with a noir-inspired aesthetic, the game follows Jack Pepper, an anthropomorphic mouse and war veteran turned private eye, as he unravels a gritty conspiracy involving political corruption, missing persons, and lethal enemies.
Beyond the 1930s Cartoon Aesthetic
When the game was first teased in 2023, its black-and-white art style was the primary hook. However, after 12 hours of gameplay, it is clear that Mouse: PI For Hire is far more than a visual gimmick. The game successfully balances a compelling detective narrative—complete with clue-gathering and corkboard deductions—with high-octane action. While the story occasionally leans into heavy-handed tropes, such as a Nazi-inspired political party oppressing shrews, the core mystery remains engaging enough to keep players invested until the final act.
Level Design: A Varied Culinary Spread

The developers have utilized the classic cartoon aesthetic to create a diverse range of environments that feel anything but repetitive. Beyond the expected noir-drenched back alleys and seaside docks, players will traverse creepy swamps, surreal movie sets, and bizarre laboratories. These levels are masterfully designed, offering a perfect balance between linear progression and hidden nooks filled with charming, tiny details like dancing slugs and spiders in shoes.
Refined Combat and High-Stakes Gunplay

Despite the inclusion of a hub world, collectible baseball cards, and an animated overworld map, Mouse: PI For Hire is fundamentally an FPS. Roughly 80 percent of the experience involves intense combat against a variety of foes, including robots, dogs, and rival mice. Mobility is key; players must master the dash, double jump, and grapple mechanics to survive, as enemies hit hard. Healing is managed through the consumption of cheddar, adding a tactical layer to the frenetic shootouts.
An Arsenal That Packs a Punch

The weaponry is a highlight, blending cartoonish animations with visceral, heavy-hitting feedback. The “James Gun” (a Tommy Gun) stands out as a top-tier weapon, especially when upgraded via hidden blueprints. While the arsenal is deep, a few late-game additions feel less impactful, and some final combat encounters suffer from difficulty spikes that disrupt the game’s otherwise excellent flow. Nevertheless, these minor flaws do little to diminish the overall achievement of this inventive, action-packed title that stands as a unique entry in the FPS genre.
