Microsoft Gaming CEO Vows to Avoid ‘Soulless AI Slop’

Microsoft announced a major leadership overhaul on Friday, confirming that Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer and Xbox president Sarah Bond are stepping down from their roles.

A New Era for Xbox Leadership

Asha Sharma, a former executive at Meta and Instacart, has been appointed to lead the division. Sharma joins the gaming team from her most recent position as president of Microsoft’s CoreAI product, a transition that signals a strategic pivot toward integrating artificial intelligence deeper into the company’s gaming portfolio.

Microsoft’s AI Ambitions in Gaming

The company has spent recent months testing the boundaries of AI within its ecosystem. Past initiatives include the development of an AI-powered gaming companion and the release of an AI-generated level for Quake II, which was notably met with criticism for its technical instability.

Sharma’s Stance on AI Implementation

In an internal memo published by The Verge, Sharma outlined her vision for the future of the brand. While she acknowledged that “monetization and AI” will inevitably “evolve and influence this future,” she emphasized a commitment to quality over automation.

“We will invent new business models and new ways to play,” Sharma wrote. “However, we will not chase short-term efficiency or flood our ecosystem with soulless AI slop.”

Prioritizing Human Creativity

Addressing concerns regarding the dehumanization of game development, Sharma asserted that the core philosophy of the division remains unchanged. “Games are and always will be art, crafted by humans, and created with the most innovative technology provided by us,” she added.

This pledge serves as one of three core commitments outlined in her memo, alongside promises to focus on building “great games beloved by players” and reinforcing the priority of the Xbox platform.
