Obbe Vermeij, a legendary developer who spent 17 years at Rockstar Games shaping the Grand Theft Auto franchise, has officially unveiled his new project: a tranquil god game titled Plentiful.

From Urban Chaos to Natural Harmony
Vermeij, who famously spent the last year sharing behind-the-scenes development secrets from Grand Theft Auto 3, Vice City, and San Andreas, is trading high-octane crime for environmental restoration. Plentiful centers on a simple, meditative loop: players manipulate rocks across a map to collect rainwater, fostering the growth of plant life to sustain a tribe.
The developer describes his new endeavor as “a relaxing game about creating conditions for nature to thrive.” With an understated art style and a minimalist Steam presence, the project stands in stark contrast to the sprawling, high-stakes, and hyper-commercialized open worlds that defined his tenure at Rockstar and Take-Two.
A Departure from Rockstar’s Darker Roots
The shift in genre appears deeply personal. Vermeij previously revealed that he opted to leave Rockstar following the development of Grand Theft Auto 4, noting that he felt the series was becoming “too dark, too depressing almost.”
While Plentiful currently lacks a firm release date—with Vermeij stating it will launch “when it’s done”—the premise offers a refreshing change of pace. The act of manipulating streams and lakes to cultivate life evokes a nostalgic, tactile sense of play that feels worlds away from the gritty streets of Liberty City or Los Santos.
Insights into the Future of GTA
Beyond his new project, Vermeij remains a keen observer of his former employer. His recent commentary on the industry has been highly anticipated, particularly his perspective on the upcoming GTA 6. Vermeij has publicly suggested that he does not expect the new entry to be “wildly different” from the formula established in GTA 5, offering a grounded outlook on what fans can expect from the series moving forward.
