Lithuanian developer Fluxo Games is turning a dark chapter of 19th-century history into a compelling resource management experience with Book Smugglers. Set in 1866 during the Russian Empire’s occupation, the game tasks players with preserving the Lithuanian language by trafficking banned literature across a landscape filled with peril and moral dilemmas.

A High-Stakes Game of Strategy
The core gameplay loop functions as a 3D board game, where players navigate a map defined by crossroads marked with gold coins. Each turn, these coins flip to reveal randomized encounters that demand quick thinking and strategic resource allocation. Whether you are choosing to help a stranger or hoarding your supplies, every decision carries weight. In my demo, a simple act of charity backfired when the beneficiary pilfered one of my precious books, proving that in Book Smugglers, resources like food, weapons, and literature are never in surplus.

Survival Under Occupation
Managing your inventory is the difference between life and death. Players begin with 100 rubles, 15 books, and a single food item. As your health declines from environmental hazards or hostile encounters, food becomes essential for survival. My own journey took a turn for the worse when a reckless move landed me in a confrontation with a police patrol. Without weapons or bribes, I was forced into a desperate chase sequence, narrowly escaping via a dramatic, hand-painted cutscene.

RPG Depth and Narrative Choice
The game shines through its narrative-heavy encounters, reminiscent of Pentiment. After meeting Father Valenčius, a supporter of the resistance, the game allows players to define their character’s background. Choosing between a bard, a bureaucrat’s assistant, or a farmer provides distinct stat buffs—such as increased luck, inventory space, or the ability to preview encounters—which significantly impact your playstyle.

Tactical Planning and Build-Crafting
As you progress, the game evolves into a deep tactical experience. Visiting taverns allows for trading and gear acquisition, forcing players to weigh the importance of defensive items like shotguns against survival gear like camouflage. This blend of “choose your own adventure” storytelling and rigorous management makes Book Smugglers a title to watch for anyone who enjoys history-infused strategy and high-stakes survival.
