InXile Entertainment is turning a digital mishap into a win for players after an error on the Microsoft Store accidentally distributed a broken version of Wasteland Remastered, the classic RPG that paved the way for the Fallout franchise.

Turning a Glitch into a Gift
A few weeks ago, a store error made Wasteland Remastered available for free to Xbox users. Unfortunately, the version distributed was technically flawed and unplayable. Rather than simply revoking access, inXile Entertainment has announced it will replace the broken files with fully functional copies.
“A couple weeks ago an error made Wasteland Remastered free on the Microsoft/Xbox Store, but what people snagged before we fixed the glitch can’t actually be played,” the developer stated on social media. “So, we’re giving them one that can.”
How to Claim Your Working Copy
Players who redeemed the original, faulty version will see it automatically removed from their digital libraries. In its place, a new, functional digital copy of Wasteland Remastered will be deposited into their Xbox accounts. InXile advises affected players to check the ‘Offers & Credits’ section of their Xbox account page to locate their new game.
The Legacy of Wasteland
For the uninitiated, Wasteland is the definitive post-apocalyptic RPG. Originally developed by Interplay Productions, the game served as the direct inspiration and mechanical foundation for the first Fallout title. InXile often refers to it as the “granddaddy of post-apoc,” essentially defining the genre long before Fallout became a household name.
From Interplay to Xbox
The history of the franchise is deeply intertwined with its current stewards. Interplay co-founder Brian Fargo later established inXile Entertainment, eventually reclaiming the Wasteland rights from Electronic Arts to produce modern sequels. In 2018, Xbox acquired both inXile and the Wasteland IP, coincidentally shortly before securing the rights to the Fallout franchise itself.
What’s Next for inXile?
While managing the legacy of their classic titles, the studio is currently focused on Clockwork Revolution. This upcoming time-bending, steampunk-inspired first-person RPG is highly anticipated, with the studio aiming to translate the deep narrative reactivity found in their isometric RPGs into an immersive first-person experience.
