Mewgenics co-creator Tyler Glaiel has publicly described the process of releasing balance patches for popular Steam titles as “the scariest thing a human can experience,” citing the intense community backlash that often follows gameplay adjustments.

The High-Stakes Reality of Game Balancing
Taking to social media, Glaiel offered a stark perspective on developer anxiety: “People be like ‘The scariest thing a human can experience is drowning’. They clearly have never had to release a balance patch for a popular game on Steam.”
This commentary follows the release of a new update on the Mewgenics beta branch. While players largely welcomed buffs to the Mage class, the community pushed back against specific nerfs. Changes to the Mutation stat—which previously allowed players to build massive, inbred armies of cats—proved controversial. Additionally, the Hunter’s “Scattershot” skill faced a significant nerf, as its upgraded version no longer excludes allies from friendly fire.
Lessons from Slay the Spire 2
Glaiel’s apprehension is grounded in recent industry trends. The gaming community recently witnessed a sharp decline in sentiment for Slay the Spire 2, which saw its lifetime positive review score on Steam drop to 66% following its first major update. The backlash highlighted how quickly player frustration can manifest when developers alter established mechanics, even when those developers stand by their design decisions regarding boss encounters and game flow.
The Meta vs. The Casual Experience
Despite the heated debate surrounding optimal builds, many players find the core experience of Mewgenics remains satisfying regardless of minor nerfs. While the game features complex breeding mechanics that encourage deep min-maxing, the title remains highly enjoyable for those focusing on organic progression rather than strictly adhering to the current meta.
As discussions continue regarding the future of titles like Slay the Spire 2—which recently confirmed it will not include an endless mode, potentially leaving the feature to the modding community—the tension between developer vision and player expectations remains a defining challenge in modern game development.
