Why GTA 6 Is Skipping PC at Launch: Take-Two CEO Explains

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will launch exclusively on consoles, dismissing rumors that a marketing deal with Sony is responsible for the omission of a PC version.

Debunking the Sony Marketing Deal Rumors

In a recent discussion with Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, Zelnick addressed speculation that a partnership with Sony kept the PC version off the table. He firmly denied this, stating, “No. I mean, historically Rockstar’s gone to console first.”

For years, industry insiders have speculated that a PlayStation marketing agreement could be driving the launch strategy. Given that the release of GTA 6 is expected to trigger a massive wave of hardware upgrades, it is logical that Sony would want to align its brand with the game’s highly anticipated debut. However, the theory that Sony would pay to keep the game off PC remains questionable, particularly since the title is also confirmed for Xbox Series X/S, Sony’s primary competitor.

Prioritizing the “Core Consumer”

According to Zelnick, the decision to ignore PC at launch stems from a strategic focus on Rockstar’s primary player base. “Rockstar always starts on console because I think with regard to a release like that you’re judged by serving the core,” Zelnick explained. “Like really serving the core consumer. If your core consumer isn’t there, if they’re not served first and best, you kind of don’t hit your other consumers.”

This justification may leave some PC enthusiasts skeptical, especially considering that many third-party publishers—including Take-Two itself—regularly manage simultaneous multi-platform launches without compromising the quality of the experience for their core audience.

The Growing Importance of the PC Market

Despite the current console-first strategy, Zelnick acknowledged that the PC platform has become an increasingly vital segment of the gaming industry. He noted that while PC versions of titles like NBA 2K represented only about 5% of sales in the late 2000s, that figure has shifted dramatically.

“Now with regard to a big title, PC can be 45, 50% of the sales,” Zelnick added. It appears Take-Two is betting that the massive hype surrounding GTA 6 will remain strong enough to capture that significant portion of the market whenever a PC version eventually arrives.

While a formal PC release date remains unconfirmed, recent leaks suggest that Rockstar’s focus on consoles may also be influenced by financial data, which indicates that a vast majority of GTA Online revenue is generated through console players.
