A former Square Enix executive claims that Sony’s minimal marketing support for Marathon signals a significant lack of confidence in Bungie’s latest title from the platform holder.

Is Sony Abandoning Marathon?
Jacob Navok, the former director of business at Square Enix Holdings, recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to address Marathon’s performance. Describing the game’s Steam player count as “brutal,” Navok argued that the platform holder’s strategy is telling. “Sony owns a ton of digital real estate on the PlayStation dashboards to push Marathon,” he noted, emphasizing that the deliberate absence of a major marketing push reflects a fundamental lack of faith in the project.
Comparing Live Service Strategies
While Sony has struggled with its live service ambitions in recent years, Marathon occupies a complex space. Unlike the ill-fated Concord, Marathon maintains a dedicated core of players who are deeply invested in its challenging gameplay loop. However, the disparity in promotion is stark. While Xbox typically leverages its dashboard to aggressively highlight new first-party tentpole titles, Sony has seemingly prioritized other projects, such as Arc Raiders, on the PlayStation Store front page for much of Marathon’s release window.
The Challenge of Sustaining a Fanbase
Despite the “dead game” discourse that plagues many modern titles, Marathon does possess a passionate, albeit niche, community. Industry observers point out that the game’s long-term viability depends heavily on continued developer and publisher support. Without a concerted effort to nurture this initial player base, the game faces an uphill battle to achieve widespread relevance.
The Final Fantasy 14 Precedent
The history of the industry shows that a rocky launch does not always dictate a game’s ultimate fate. Final Fantasy 14, for instance, was widely considered a failure at launch. Through massive investment and a commitment to addressing community feedback, Square Enix transformed it into a genre-defining MMO that rivals World of Warcraft. The question remains whether Marathon will be afforded similar patience, or if the plug will be pulled prematurely, preventing it from ever finding its true potential.
Bungie has already begun making adjustments to the experience, specifically making the Cryo Archive less punishing by blocking spawn-rush strategies and providing free kits to players.
