How Evil Empire Convinced Konami to Revive Castlevania

The creation of Castlevania: The Rogue (originally referred to as Belmont’s Curse) was sparked by Konami’s surprising enthusiasm for Evil Empire’s pitch, despite the developers initially fearing the project was too ambitious for the publisher to approve.

From Dead Cells DLC to a Standalone Title

The trend of major AAA publishers outsourcing dormant intellectual properties to independent studios has yielded a high-profile success in Castlevania: The Rogue. For the team at Evil Empire, however, the journey began with deep skepticism. The studio, which was spun off from Motion Twin to manage post-launch content for Dead Cells, was convinced that Konami would reject their initial proposal for a Castlevania-themed expansion.

Given the heavy influence of Metroidvania classics like Symphony of the Night on Dead Cells, the 2023 Return to Castlevania DLC appeared to be a logical partnership from a player’s perspective. Internally, the development team remained hesitant, doubting that a massive Japanese publisher would grant creative freedom to a smaller independent outfit.

Konami’s Unexpected Green Light

Contrary to the developers’ fears, Konami not only approved the DLC concept but embraced the project with significant enthusiasm. As the scope of the collaboration expanded, the publisher’s interest grew alongside it. According to the team, the dialogue evolved rapidly, with Konami eventually asking if the studio would be interested in developing an entirely new Castlevania game.

The sentiment within Evil Empire is one of excitement, reinforcing a philosophy that daring to pitch bold ideas to established industry giants can yield unexpected and rewarding outcomes. This scenario mirrors other recent industry success stories, where high-stakes outreach has led to major collaborative projects, proving that even the most storied franchises are open to new visions when the right pitch is presented.
