Arrowhead Game Studios CEO Shams Jorjani recently addressed the volatile nature of maintaining Helldivers 2, admitting that balancing a live-service game is “tricky as hell” due to the constant evolution of player expectations and community feedback.

The Unpredictable Reality of Game Updates
In a candid discussion on the official Helldivers 2 Discord, Jorjani responded to community suggestions that the development team should prioritize player feedback more heavily. He explained that managing a live-service title is far from a precise methodology. According to the CEO, even extensive internal and external testing cycles do not guarantee a positive reception, as player sentiment often shifts unexpectedly once updates go live.

Why Player Perception Shifts Over Time
Jorjani highlighted a fundamental challenge in live-service development: the community itself is in a constant state of flux. He noted that a player’s perspective on the game changes drastically depending on their engagement level—whether they have logged ten hours, 100 hours, or over 1,000 hours. This disparity makes it exceptionally difficult to implement changes that satisfy the entire player base simultaneously.
The Endless Cycle of Balancing
The development lifecycle for multiplayer shooters often follows a predictable pattern: an update is released, initial resistance occurs, and players eventually adapt, only for the cycle to repeat with the next round of changes. For Helldivers 2, this involves the delicate task of balancing new weapons, fresh planets, and enemy encounters through a continuous loop of buffs and nerfs.
The most recent patch exemplifies this struggle, introducing rebalances to the Exo Suit and minor adjustments to various enemies. As the team continues to navigate these hurdles, Jorjani maintains that the process remains an ongoing learning experience, emphasizing that the inherent complexity of live service is a persistent reality for the studio.
The studio’s commitment to refining the experience remains firm, with leadership previously promising “meaningful changes” following intense community feedback and candid discussions regarding the current state of the game.
