IllFonic has finally mastered the art of asymmetrical multiplayer with Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed, a title that perfectly marries the iconic franchise with the developer’s expertise in 4v1 gameplay. Unlike their previous projects, Friday the 13th and Predator: Hunting Grounds, which struggled with technical polish and uneven mechanics, Spirits Unleashed delivers a cohesive, high-energy experience from the start.
The Perfect Balance of Busting and Haunting
In this game, four customizable Ghostbusters square off against a single ghost across five distinct maps, ranging from a cozy lodge to an Alcatraz-inspired prison. What sets this apart from similar titles is that both sides are genuinely fun to play. If you prefer to be the antagonist, matchmaking allows you to jump into a haunting session with minimal wait times, thanks to a healthy player base and full cross-platform play. For those who prefer a solitary experience, the game offers a bot-driven mode that allows you to enjoy all the content without needing an online connection.
Gameplay Loop: The Hunt is On
Matches are fast-paced and strategic. Busters utilize P.K.E. meters to track down the ghost and locate hidden rifts—the ghost’s respawn points. Destroying these rifts depletes the ghost’s “lives,” while wrangling the spirit into a trap serves as the ultimate goal. Meanwhile, the ghost must haunt objects and frighten NPCs to increase the map’s haunting percentage. If the ghost hits 100 percent or the Busters fail to capture them before the endgame timer expires, the haunting is successful.
Coordinating with teammates to trap a ghost is incredibly satisfying. While Busters can be slimed, the game ensures players are rarely stuck on the sidelines, keeping the action constant. The only minor drawback is the repetitive voice lines when calming panicked NPCs.
Mastering the Ghostly Arts
With five ghost types available, each offers a unique playstyle—from offensive, chain-attacking spirits to mischievous tricksters. All ghosts possess basic attacks, minion summons, and unique ultimate moves. Possessing objects is essential for survival, providing both a hiding spot and an energy recharge. The constant tension between being a powerful, mobile threat and being vulnerable to a well-placed trap makes every encounter a thrill.
Progression and the Firehouse Hub
The iconic firehouse serves as your central hub, where you can progress through a narrative featuring the return of Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson as Ray and Winston. While the story is straightforward, the progression system is addictive. Leveling up grants access to new cosmetics, gear upgrades, and contracts. These gear modifications feel impactful, significantly changing your effectiveness in the field, such as allowing your particle thrower to run longer without overheating.
Long-Term Sustainability Concerns
Despite the strong core gameplay, the game faces potential longevity issues. With only one primary match type and a limited pool of maps, the experience can become repetitive once you hit level 50 and the story concludes. While IllFonic has promised future free updates, the current endgame relies heavily on grinding repetitive contracts. Additionally, while early technical bugs—such as crashes and clipping issues—were largely addressed by the day-one patch, players should remain mindful of potential stability hiccups.
The Verdict
Ghostbusters: Spirits Unleashed shines brightest when played with a group of friends, offering a chaotic and hilarious loop of hunting and haunting. Even for solo players, the matchmaking is seamless and the teamwork mechanics are intuitive. While the thrill eventually plateaus, the foundation is rock solid, and with consistent content updates, it has the potential to keep the proton packs humming for a long time to come.
