EA’s 2015 Battlefront Remains the Best-Selling Star Wars Game

Despite a mixed critical reception at its 2015 launch, EA’s Star Wars Battlefront reboot officially holds the title of the best-selling Star Wars video game in U.S. history, according to data from market research firm Circana.

EA Dominates the Star Wars Sales Charts

Mat Piscatella, an analyst at Circana, confirmed this milestone while sharing industry insights for Star Wars Day. The data reveals that the Star Wars franchise ranks 7th overall in lifetime full-game dollar sales in the U.S., excluding digital add-ons. While Circana’s tracking is limited to the U.S. market, global sales trends likely mirror this dominance, given the rapid expansion of the gaming industry over the last decade.

EA’s influence on the franchise is undeniable, as the publisher occupies the top four spots on the list of best-selling Star Wars titles. Following the 2015 Battlefront reboot, the highest-selling games include Jedi: Fallen Order, Battlefront 2, and Jedi: Survivor.

The Shift from LucasArts Classics

Noticeably absent from the top tiers are beloved titles from the LucasArts era, such as Knights of the Old Republic, Jedi Knight, and Republic Commando. In fact, only two games from that era—The Force Unleashed and the original Battlefront 2—managed to crack the top ten, securing the seventh and eighth positions, respectively. The remaining spots are filled by EA titles or Lego-themed entries.

For long-time fans who view classics like KOTOR as genre-defining benchmarks, the modern sales leaderboard highlights a significant shift in the gaming landscape. While contemporary titles like the Jedi series and Star Wars Outlaws maintain a strong presence, they exist in a market that has grown exponentially beyond the scope of 90s and early 2000s classics.

Ultimately, the performance of these modern titles serves as a reminder that the gaming industry’s growth often outpaces the reach of retro-gaming nostalgia. While the sales figures favor the modern era, the legacy of titles like TIE Fighter remains a frequent point of discussion for those who value the historical depth of the Star Wars gaming catalog.
