David Hayter, the iconic voice of Snake, has revealed that he never fully grasped the complex narrative of the Metal Gear Solid series while recording his lines, yet he believes this confusion is essential to the franchise’s unique identity.

“Just Say It”: The Reality of Recording Snake
In a recent interview with Fall Damage, Hayter addressed the long-standing mystery surrounding the series’ convoluted plot. When asked if he truly understands the Metal Gear Solid storyline, Hayter was candid: “Do I understand the story of Metal Gear Solid? Uh, basically I do; Do I understand all of it? Absolutely not. I didn’t understand all of it while we were recording it.”

Hayter recalled moments in the recording booth where he would question the script, only to be met with simple instructions from the production team. “I’d be like, ‘What does this mean?’ and they’d say, ‘just say it.’ And I’d be like, ‘Okay.'” Far from being frustrated, Hayter views this ambiguity as a hallmark of the series. “That’s what makes Metal Gear, Metal Gear,” he explained. He argues that the sheer volume of character development and narrative detail exceeds what any player could absorb, which ultimately makes the world feel “real, rich, and lovable.”
Complexity as a Franchise Staple
While Metal Gear is frequently criticized for its nonsensical plot twists, the core narrative remains relatively grounded compared to other long-running franchises. Spanning seven canon titles, the series avoids the extreme narrative fragmentation seen in properties like Kingdom Hearts.
However, even dedicated fans acknowledge that the series became increasingly convoluted by the time Metal Gear Solid 4 arrived. The narrative reached peak complexity with bizarre plot points, such as characters brainwashing themselves into believing they were possessed, protagonists immune to weapons due to chronic medical conditions, and various retcons implemented to force connections between disparate entries in the timeline.
Despite these narrative hurdles, Hayter’s commitment to the role remains legendary, even extending to his early efforts to avoid sounding too much like the cinematic inspirations that almost led to legal complications for the production.
