Debunking the PS4 Rumors

The official Call of Duty social media channels addressed widespread speculation today, explicitly shutting down claims that the upcoming title was being tested for PlayStation 4. While the statement focused on Sony’s last-gen console, it implies a broader departure from the aging PS4 and Xbox One architecture. The clarification also serves to manage expectations regarding upcoming releases, following Activision’s previous commitment to move away from back-to-back Modern Warfare or Black Ops iterations.

A Shift Toward Current-Gen Power

The decision to abandon legacy consoles follows a period of frustration among fans. Last year’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 7 utilized a cross-gen release strategy, which many players felt hindered the game’s technical performance and prevented the series from fully leveraging the capabilities of current-gen hardware. By pivoting away from the PS4, developers now have the opportunity to push the graphical and mechanical boundaries that have remained stagnant due to hardware limitations.

The Long Lifecycle of Last-Gen

For decades, Activision—now under Microsoft—has prioritized massive install bases to maximize revenue, often keeping Call of Duty tethered to older platforms years into a new cycle. Historically, the franchise supported the PS3 and Xbox 360 for nearly a decade, with Infinite Warfare in 2016 standing as the first title to finally abandon that era. With the PS5 and Xbox Series X now approaching their six-year anniversary, the transition to current-gen exclusivity arrives as a long-awaited milestone for the franchise’s technical evolution.
