Blood of Dawnwalker: RPG Blends BG3 Freedom with Gothic Depth

Creative director Mateusz Tomaszkiewicz is shaping The Blood of Dawnwalker by fusing the high-agency, choice-driven narrative of Baldur’s Gate 3 with the dense, atmospheric world-building found in the classic Gothic RPG series.

Prioritizing Meaningful Player Agency

For Tomaszkiewicz, modern RPG design should move away from cinematic experiences that treat the player as a passive observer. Instead, he aims to maximize player agency, ensuring that every decision leaves a tangible mark on the game world. Drawing inspiration from Larian Studios’ success, the development team is building a “narrative sandbox” where players can choose which plot lines to engage with, directly influencing how the environment reacts to their presence.

The Power of a Dense, Contained World

While many modern titles chase massive, sprawling maps, The Blood of Dawnwalker is intentionally focusing on a smaller, more refined scope. Tomaszkiewicz expresses fatigue with overly bloated games, noting that he prefers the design philosophy of the Gothic games, which traded sheer size for high-density content.

By keeping the game world condensed, the developers aim to eliminate “empty space” and ensure that every location feels inhabited and rich with purpose. “I don’t have that much time, and I prefer more condensed experiences,” says Tomaszkiewicz. “It felt like you really inhabited that space. This is something I really enjoy.”

Sustainable Development and World Quality

Beyond design philosophy, the decision to maintain a focused scope is also a practical choice for the studio. Managing a smaller, high-density world allows the team to produce content more effectively without sacrificing quality. This approach ensures that players receive a meaningful experience packed with quests and characters, rather than a vast map filled with repetitive, filler activities.
