Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced will retain its original 16x16km map size while increasing environmental density, creative director Paul Fu confirmed during a recent Reddit AMA.

A Dense Caribbean Experience
Returning to the 18th-century Caribbean, the upcoming remake aims to refine the fan-favorite experience rather than expand its physical footprint. Addressing concerns regarding the game’s scale, Fu clarified that while the geographical dimensions remain identical to the original release, players will encounter a more packed world. The update introduces new islands and additional locations seamlessly integrated into existing cities.
This design philosophy prioritizes quality over sheer square footage. Given that the original Black Flag already featured a massive, grand scale capable of supporting complex naval combat and island exploration, the decision to focus on density rather than expansion ensures the world remains focused and engaging.

Enhanced Exploration and Gameplay
The increased environmental detail suggests that players will spend less time traversing empty waters and more time uncovering varied treasures and secrets. For completionists aiming for 100% synchronization, this added depth will likely extend the total playtime significantly.
Furthermore, the development team is integrating previously exclusive online content directly into the core experience. Features such as white whales and royal convoys are now permanent fixtures of the game world. These encounters are supplemented by the inclusion of Anomalies—limited-time missions inspired by the mechanics found in Assassin’s Creed Shadows—adding further layers of activity to the Caribbean journey.
While the remake promises a wealth of new content, the core appeal of naval warfare remains a primary focus. Lead developer Paul Fu has emphasized that the team views the original title as a legendary installment, noting that their goal is to do justice to the source material rather than attempt to replace what many consider the “GOAT” of the franchise.
