Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced Gets Shadows Engine Upgrade

Ubisoft is modernizing the classic pirate adventure Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced by integrating the advanced Anvil engine used in Assassin’s Creed Shadows, bringing dynamic weather, destructible environments, and a complete overhaul of the game’s iconic naval water physics to the remake.

Harnessing the Power of Anvil

The decision to utilize the same proprietary Anvil engine that powered Assassin’s Creed Shadows allows the development team to bridge the gap between a 2013 classic and modern technical standards. During a recent Reddit AMA, game director Richard Knight confirmed that the remake is tapping into the engine’s full suite of capabilities.

“The Anvil Engine at the heart of Shadows is at the heart of Black Flag Resynced too, giving us access to everything from Raytracing and RTGI to better sound, dynamic weather, destructible objects and more,” Knight explained.

Revolutionizing Naval Gameplay

Beyond visual fidelity, the team is prioritizing the game’s most essential element: the Caribbean ocean. Given that players spend the majority of their time navigating the seas or exploring island coastlines, the developers have collaborated closely with the Anvil water-tech team to ensure the naval experience feels more immersive than ever before.

“Specifically for Black Flag Resynced, the Anvil watertech team has been a critical part of the experience in giving us the best naval experience yet,” Knight noted.

Modern Mechanics Without the RPG Bloat

While the remake adopts the sophisticated parkour systems seen in recent franchise entries, Ubisoft is intentionally steering clear of the stat-heavy RPG mechanics that define the series’ recent history. The developers have clarified that the combat in Black Flag Resynced will remain distinct from the leveling systems and stat checks found in the franchise’s larger RPG titles.

Fans eager to set sail with these technical improvements can look forward to the launch of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced, which arrives on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S on July 9.
