Expanding the Pirate Legend

While Ubisoft’s “Black Flag Resynced” has been an open secret for months, the official announcement of this “rebuilt from the ground up” remake has finally set a release window for July. Despite the game’s long development cycle rumors, it appears the title holds fresh narrative surprises that even seasoned fans of the franchise haven’t seen before.

A Writer’s Return to the Caribbean

McDevitt—whose extensive resume includes lead writing roles on the original Black Flag and Revelations, as well as contributions to Valhalla, Unity, and Origins—shared the news on the Access the Animus Discord. He revealed that his work on the project involved writing two entirely new scenes and amending a pivotal sequence within the main story.

The veteran writer expressed genuine excitement about the additions, stating, “One of them is now a top five favorite scene for me in the game.” He added, “I hope y’all love it. You’ll wonder why it was never in there to begin with. And that’s because I didn’t conceive of it until recently!”

Narrative Integrity in Modern Remakes

The introduction of new plot elements in established classics often carries significant risk, as even minor narrative shifts can alter the perception of a beloved story. However, having the original architect of the script oversee these changes provides a level of creative continuity that fans are likely to appreciate. Beyond these narrative tweaks, the studio has confirmed that the parkour mechanics in Black Flag Resynced will build upon the improvements seen in Assassin’s Creed Shadows and Valhalla.
