Rockstar Games has officially delayed the highly anticipated Grand Theft Auto VI, pushing its release date to November 19, 2026, to allow for further development and polish.
The Extended Wait for Rockstar’s Next Blockbuster
Originally scheduled for a fall 2025 launch before being moved to May 2026, the game is now facing another significant shift. On Thursday, Rockstar Games announced that the development team requires an additional six months to meet internal quality standards.
“We are sorry for adding additional time to what we realize has been a long wait, but these extra months will allow us to finish the game with the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve,” the studio stated regarding the latest postponement.
A Franchise Defined by Record-Breaking Success
Grand Theft Auto VI serves as the successor to 2013’s Grand Theft Auto V, a title that reshaped the industry. According to Guinness World Records, GTA V stands as the fastest entertainment property to generate $1 billion in sales, achieving the feat in just three days.
The anticipation surrounding the sequel is unprecedented. When the initial trailer debuted in December 2023, it shattered the record for the most views on YouTube within a 24-hour period for a non-music video, highlighting why fans remain so eager for the title’s eventual arrival.
Internal Challenges at Rockstar Games
While Rockstar Games has not disclosed specific technical reasons for the latest delay, the studio has faced internal turbulence recently. Just last week, the company terminated between 30 and 40 employees, citing allegations that staff members were leaking confidential information via a Discord server.
