The FBI has launched an official investigation into a cybercriminal suspected of distributing multiple video games embedded with malware through the Steam storefront, the agency announced Friday.
List of Compromised Titles
In an effort to identify and assist potential victims, the FBI released a list of titles allegedly weaponized by the same actor over the past two years. The suspected games hosted on Valve’s platform include: BlockBlasters, Chemia, Dashverse/DashFPS, Lampy, Lunara, PirateFi, and Tokenova.
A Recurring Security Threat on Steam
This incident marks another security lapse for the Valve-owned marketplace. Last year, a similar scheme saw hackers publish functional, albeit rudimentary, games that served as Trojan horses designed to infect users’ computers. While Steam eventually removed the malicious software, an undisclosed number of players had already been compromised before the platform intervened.
Silence from Stakeholders
Both Valve and the FBI have declined to comment on the ongoing investigation or the specific security measures being taken to prevent future occurrences.
