Rec Room to Shut Down: $3.5B Social Gaming Giant Closing

Social gaming platform Rec Room will officially shut down on June 1, ending its run as a major player in the virtual space after failing to navigate shifting market conditions and long-term financial hurdles. The company made the official announcement on Monday, marking the end of a platform that once sat at the center of the social VR boom.

From Pandemic Favorite to Market Exit

For millions of users who frequented its virtual worlds to connect, create, and socialize, the news marks a significant shift in the gaming landscape. Rec Room became a cultural touchstone during the pandemic, eventually amassing a user base of over 150 million players who relied on the platform for digital interaction.

A Meteoric Rise and High Valuation

Established in 2016 by co-founders Nick Fajt and Cameron Brown, the platform quickly captured the attention of the tech industry. Its rapid growth and popularity led to massive investment rounds, culminating in a staggering $3.5 billion valuation in December 2021.

The Financial Struggle Behind the Scenes

Despite its massive community and the introduction of advanced tools like Maker AI, the company faced a persistent inability to bridge the gap between popularity and profitability. Operational costs soared while revenue streams failed to scale, forcing the company to initiate significant layoffs earlier this year in a desperate bid to stabilize.

“We spent a long time trying to find a way to make the numbers work,” the company stated in its announcement. “But with the recent shift in the VR market, along with broader headwinds in gaming, the path to profitability has gotten tough enough that we’ve made the difficult decision to shut things down.”

Timeline for the Platform Shutdown

The wind-down process is immediate. Effective now, users can no longer create new accounts or send friend requests. Additionally, the ability for creators to share monetized content has been disabled. The platform will remain live for existing users until June 1, when it will officially go dark at 12 p.m. PT.
