Old School RuneScape Running Out of IDs: Jagex Warns of Bug

Jagex, the developer behind Old School RuneScape (OSRS), is facing a critical technical bottleneck: the game is rapidly exhausting its supply of unique identification numbers (IDs) for models and scenery, forcing engineers to perform urgent maintenance to prevent the game from breaking.

A Joke That Revealed a Technical Reality

The discovery surfaced following a satirical post on the 2007scape subreddit. A fake social media update, mocking the game’s legendary “spaghetti code,” jokingly claimed that developer Mod Ash was deleting the entire game to fix its persistent bugs. While the community treated it as a meme, the reality shared by a Jagex developer was far more serious.

OSRS is famous for its complex, often fragile engine, where “engine work” is frequently cited as the reason for development delays. However, Jagex developer Mod Nin stepped into the Reddit thread to clarify the situation: “You joke, but we are imminently going to run out of IDs to assign to models and scenery so we need to do a bunch of work to stop the game exploding soon.”

A Legacy of “Kicking the Can Down the Road”

This is not the first time Jagex has hit this wall. According to Mod Nin, the team encountered this same resource limit back in May 2018. At that time, the developer responsible opted for a quick fix—doubling the available capacity—rather than implementing a permanent structural solution. “Either the developer at the time was in a bit of a hurry or didn’t have much faith in the longevity of the game, as they only doubled the available capacity,” Nin explained.

Why ID Limits Matter for MMOs

Every object in Old School RuneScape—from simple stones to complex statues—requires a unique ID to function within the game world. With the constant addition of new content, such as the recently introduced Sailing skill, these IDs are being consumed at an accelerated rate.

For instance, items related to the Sailing skill, like the Camphor cargo hold, are already appearing in the 60,000 range. Given standard programming patterns, it is widely speculated that the technical hard limit for these IDs may be 64,000. If the game reaches this ceiling, the engine will no longer be able to identify or place new assets, potentially causing the game’s systems to fail entirely. While it remains to be seen if Jagex will once again simply increase the limit or refactor the underlying code, the situation highlights the unique challenges of maintaining an MMO that has defied expectations by thriving for over a decade.
