Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind delivers a nostalgic, co-op beat ‘em up experience that successfully captures the chaotic fun of the 90s classic, despite some repetitive gameplay loops and frustrating boss mechanics. Available for one to five players, the game allows fans to step into the boots of Jason, Zack, Kimberly, Billy, and Trini to battle through a time-bending narrative where a robotic version of Rita Repulsa attempts to rewrite history.
A Nostalgic Trip Through Angel Grove
The core appeal of Rita’s Rewind lies in its commitment to the source material. Players journey from the Rangers’ initial transformation to the iconic Green Ranger saga. The game is packed with deep-cut references, from familiar foes like Goldar and the Putty Patrol to cameos by characters like Ernie and Principal Caplan. The time-travel mechanic adds a clever layer of urgency; players must destroy time crystals before they explode, otherwise, the game forces a rewind, requiring segments to be replayed.
Combat Mechanics and Character Limitations
Combat follows the traditional brawler blueprint with satisfying, punchy feedback and a handy dodge flip. However, the experience is hindered by a lack of weapon variety—a missed opportunity given the Rangers’ distinct arsenals. Furthermore, character switching is unnecessarily restrictive, forcing players to return to a shallow hub at the Angel Grove Community Center between missions rather than allowing swaps on the fly.
Dinozords and Megazord Battles
The game breaks up the standard brawling with first-person, on-rail shooter sequences inside the Dinozords. These segments feature a charming polygonal aesthetic and provide a welcome change of pace from the repetitive ground combat. Conversely, the one-on-one Megazord battles—inspired by Punch-Out!!—feel like a mixed bag. While the cockpit perspective is immersive, the combat can become tedious due to delayed input reactions and repetitive movement patterns. Failing these encounters often requires a full restart, which can quickly become a source of frustration.
Post-Launch Improvements
Since its release, Rita’s Rewind has evolved through free updates that address some of its initial shortcomings. The addition of an optional leveling system adds much-needed character variety, while gameplay modifiers—such as gravity and speed adjustments—offer players more control over their experience. While it may not revolutionize the beat ‘em up genre, Rita’s Rewind stands out as the most polished and enjoyable cooperative Power Rangers outing to date, making it a mandatory play for those looking to relive their childhood glory days.
