Hitman developer IO Interactive is officially open to producing a sequel for 007 First Light, provided the upcoming James Bond title resonates with players and builds a strong community.

Building a Partnership for the Future

IO Interactive CEO Hakan Abrak recently discussed the studio’s collaboration with MGM and Amazon following the latter’s 2022 acquisition of the Bond franchise. Abrak emphasized that both the developer and the stakeholders are prioritizing quality above all else, noting that the long-term future of the series hinges on its reception.

“There’s no doubt that we all want to see how this is doing,” Abrak told The Game Business. “It’s not only the Amazon MGM side, it’s also the IO Interactive side. Is our character going to be well received? Is there going to be a community that likes him and wants to see more?”

Bridging Two Fanbases

The studio faces the unique challenge of satisfying two distinct groups: long-time James Bond enthusiasts and the dedicated fanbase of the Hitman series. There is always a risk that one audience may not connect with the specific direction of this project—whether Bond fans prefer a traditional first-person shooter or Hitman fans simply want more of Agent 47.

However, given the critical acclaim of the recent Hitman trilogy, confidence in IO Interactive’s stealth design remains high. The prospect of applying the studio’s signature mechanics to a suave special agent—disrupting high-society events and dismantling villainous plots—is a compelling hook for many players.

“Why Not?” A Potential Franchise

Reflecting on the industry’s current volatility, Abrak expressed gratitude that IO Interactive remains in a position to select its projects. He views the potential for a sequel as a natural next step if the game achieves its goals.

“I’m so grateful given the stories we hear every day in this industry,” he said. “We are so blessed that we are in a place where we can pick and choose what we want to do. So, if this goes really well and it’s a beloved thing from the community, why not?”

The developer has previously noted that the Bond featured in 007 First Light is designed to be more “relatable” than the stoic Agent 47, positioning him as an object of emotional connection rather than just a figure of fascination.
