Roblox officially rolled out three major parental control features this Wednesday, allowing guardians to block specific experiences, restrict individual users, and monitor play habits to address mounting accusations regarding child safety and exposure to harmful content.
Stricter Oversight for a Safer Environment
These updates represent a shift toward a more rigorous safety framework for the platform, which has faced intense scrutiny over risks like grooming, violence, and explicit material. To activate these new protections, parents must link their Roblox account to their child’s profile by verifying their identity via a credit card or government-issued ID. Once linked, these tools become accessible under the “Parental Controls” menu.
Granular Control Over Contacts and Content
The new friend-blocking feature significantly expands previous capabilities. Beyond merely viewing a friend list, parents can now actively block and report individuals they deem potentially harmful, effectively severing their ability to direct message the child. For users under 13, the restriction is permanent unless the parent explicitly approves an unblocking request.
Furthermore, the platform is moving beyond general maturity ratings. Parents can now implement experience-level blocks, offering precise control over exactly which games a child can access. As with contact restrictions, children can view these blocked lists and request parental permission to regain access to specific titles.
Data-Driven Monitoring
In addition to blocking capabilities, Roblox has introduced a transparency dashboard that displays the top 20 experiences a child has engaged with over the past week, categorized by total time spent. This feature complements existing parental tools that already allow for the monitoring and setting of daily screen time limits.
