Nintendo has officially postponed the U.S. preorder window for the highly anticipated Switch 2, originally scheduled for April 9, citing significant economic uncertainty triggered by President Donald Trump’s latest tariff announcements.
Strategic Pause in Response to Economic Shifts
“Preorders for Nintendo Switch 2 in the U.S. will not start April 9, 2025, in order to assess the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions,” a company spokesperson confirmed in a statement to TechCrunch. While the preorder phase is currently on hold, Nintendo clarified that the global launch date of June 5, 2025, remains firmly on track.
Pricing and Hardware Details
Despite the logistical adjustments regarding pre-sales, Nintendo maintains its original pricing strategy, with the console set to retail at $450. The company recently unveiled the device on Tuesday, marking the first major hardware release since the original Switch debuted in 2017.
Fans will have multiple purchase options at launch, including the standalone console or a premium bundle featuring Mario Kart World, a brand-new title developed specifically for the Switch 2 platform.
The Impact of Trade Policy on Tech
The decision to pause preorders coincides with President Trump’s announcement of sweeping trade tariffs that are expected to deal a blow to the tech industry. These new measures include tariffs of approximately 30% on goods imported from both China and Taiwan, creating potential supply chain disruptions for major technology manufacturers worldwide.
Nintendo stated that it will provide updated information regarding the new preorder timeline at a later date.
