AI gaming startup Born has secured $15 million in new funding to expand its suite of “social” AI companions designed to combat loneliness and foster deeper digital connections.
Scaling the Pengu Ecosystem
With this fresh capital, Born intends to introduce new characters to its popular Pengu app. According to founder Kamberi, the upcoming lineup includes a “cute” digital companion designed to function as an interactive learning partner. To support this growth, the startup is establishing a New York office later this year, which will serve as a hub for both marketing operations and advanced AI research.
The company’s research efforts are focused on refining its character engine. The objective is to ensure each AI friend maintains a consistent personality, retains memory of past interactions, and evolves alongside the user. Enrico Dal Re, Born’s head of finance, will spearhead the company’s strategic expansion into the U.S. market.
Targeting Gen Z with Stealth AI
Beyond its current offerings, Born is developing a new social AI product tailored specifically for users aged 16 to 21, though the apps remain accessible to users as young as 13. While Born primarily leverages OpenAI’s generative models, Kamberi emphasized that the company has implemented proprietary safety layers to ensure a secure environment.
Although the new product remains in stealth mode, Kamberi describes it as a platform for creating “culturally relevant AI companions that feel like real friends.” These bots will be capable of sharing content like TikTok videos or Instagram Reels, mirroring the social media habits of their users. Kamberi anticipates that this integration will drive “network effects” as users naturally share their AI-generated experiences across social platforms.
Redefining the AI Social Experience
Born is looking to push past the limitations of standard text-based interfaces. “We don’t believe that the current chatbot landscape is the final form factor for how AI friends and consumer AI is done,” Kamberi stated. He argues that consumer social AI must move beyond simple text-entry platforms to provide a more immersive and engaging experience.
For investors, the appeal is clear. Luca Bocchio, a partner at Accel, highlighted the company’s ambition to pioneer a new category of consumer social interaction centered on emotionally intelligent AI. “We’ve been really impressed by the team’s ability to develop chart-topping apps and their inspiring product vision, and we’re looking forward to continuing our partnership with them as they scale globally,” Bocchio added.
