Sony Interactive Entertainment announced this Wednesday the global rollout of “PlayStation Family,” a dedicated mobile application for iOS and Android designed to centralize and simplify parental monitoring and console management.
Centralizing Console Management
While Sony has historically provided parental control options, the new PlayStation Family app consolidates these fragmented tools into a single, intuitive interface. This move aims to provide parents with streamlined access to their children’s console activity and account settings.
Real-Time Monitoring and Playtime Requests
The app introduces advanced oversight capabilities, including real-time notifications that inform parents exactly what games their children are currently playing. Furthermore, the platform allows parents to manage screen time dynamically, offering the ability to approve or decline requests for extra playtime and set specific daily limits for every day of the week.

Detailed Activity Reporting and Content Filtering
Beyond basic monitoring, the app provides comprehensive daily and weekly reports. Parents can review total playtime and identify which titles are most frequently played. Additionally, content filters allow for the configuration of age-appropriate settings, featuring presets that can be automatically applied or customized to fit the specific needs of each child.
Managing Privacy and Digital Spending
The application also grants parents control over privacy settings and social feature access. Financial management is integrated as well, enabling parents to add funds, monitor account balances, and establish monthly spending limits to prevent unauthorized purchases.
Industry-Wide Shift Toward Child Safety
Sony’s latest initiative reflects a broader movement within the gaming industry to enhance safety measures for younger users. This focus on security follows recent scrutiny of platforms like Roblox, which serves a user base where 40% are children aged 12 and under. In response to public criticism regarding child protection, Roblox has recently expanded its age-estimation technology and partnered with the International Age Rating Coalition (IARC) to implement rigorous content rating standards.
