Roblox officially launched a real-time, AI-powered chat rephrasing tool on Thursday, designed to automatically rewrite offensive messages into respectful language rather than simply censoring them with hashtags.

Moving Beyond the Hashtag Filter

The company’s previous text-filtering system relied on replacing restricted words and phrases with the “#” symbol. Roblox noted that this approach often fragmented conversations, making them difficult for players to follow. By implementing AI-driven rephrasing, the platform aims to maintain the user’s original intent while stripping away prohibited content.

For instance, a message such as “Hurry TF up!” that would have previously appeared as “####” will now be automatically transformed into “Hurry up!” Roblox confirmed that all participants in the chat will be notified when a message has been modified to ensure transparency and maintain community standards.

Enhancing Community Safety and Flow

“Chat is central to how people connect, coordinate, and play on Roblox,” said Rajiv Bhatia, vice president of User and Discovery Product at Roblox. “Real-time rephrasing helps keep gameplay and conversations on track while guiding language toward what’s appropriate. This approach reduces friction in chat while maintaining the standards that help keep our community civil.”

While the new system is designed to smooth out communication, Roblox clarified that its safety protocols remain in place for more serious violations. The feature is currently supported across all languages available via the platform’s automatic translation tools.

Advanced Detection Against Bypass Attempts

Alongside the rephrasing update, Roblox is upgrading its core text-filtering engine to identify more complex variations of banned language. The company reports that the system is now significantly more effective at detecting “leetspeak” and other sophisticated methods users employ to bypass safety filters. According to Roblox, these improvements have led to a 20x reduction in false negatives regarding the sharing or solicitation of personal information.

Context of Increased Platform Scrutiny

This technological rollout follows a period of heightened pressure on the company. Roblox recently introduced mandatory facial verification for chat access following a series of lawsuits from attorneys general in states including Texas, Kentucky, and Louisiana. These legal actions were prompted by reports alleging that the platform failed to protect young users from grooming and exposure to explicit content.
