The rewards app Freecash was removed from the Apple App Store and Google Play this April following an investigation into its aggressive growth tactics, which included misleading social media advertising, suspicious backlink building, and the potential use of bot-driven traffic.
The Meteoric and Dubious Rise
Market intelligence firm Appfigures reports that Freecash saw an explosive surge in popularity, jumping from 876,000 global downloads in October 2025 to 5.5 million by January 2026. This trajectory propelled the app to the No. 2 spot on the U.S. App Store and No. 7 on Google Play, a position it maintained for months.

While downloads peaked near 6 million in February, interest began to wane, with projections estimating only 3 million installs for April. Beyond the surface-level metrics, the app faced criticism for suspiciously favorable Google backlinks and the apparent deployment of bots to artificially inflate traffic.

A Possible Bait-and-Switch
The rise of Freecash was not a straightforward path. The German company behind the app, Almedia GmbH, initially launched a version on the Apple App Store in March 2024, only for it to be removed two months later. Months later, a separate app developed by the Cyprus-based firm 256 Rewards Ltd was rebranded as “Freecash,” allowing Almedia to bypass the initial ban.

This “re-entry” tactic is a known strategy in the app scam ecosystem, as documented in reports from the Washington Post. By shifting between developer accounts, owners attempt to evade detection by store review systems.
Following outreach from TechCrunch, Apple confirmed it removed Freecash for violating guidelines 3.1.2(a) and 2.3.1, which prohibit scamming, bait-and-switch tactics, and misleading marketing. Similarly, Google confirmed the removal of the app from the Play Store on April 15, 2026.

Despite the controversy, Freecash maintained a 4.7-star rating. Apple advises users to report potential fraud through their official reporting portal.
