Epic Games Acquires Loci to Revolutionize 3D Asset Tagging

Epic Games officially acquired the AI-powered platform Loci on Wednesday, aiming to automate the labor-intensive tagging of 3D assets and bolster the detection of intellectual property (IP) violations across its ecosystem.

AI-Driven Efficiency for 3D Creators

Loci leverages advanced computer vision models to interpret and categorize 3D content. By automating the tagging process, the platform simplifies how creators search for, share, and discover digital assets. This integration is designed to alleviate the significant time burden typically associated with managing massive libraries of 3D models.

Strengthening Intellectual Property Protection

Beyond streamlining workflows, Loci’s technology serves as a critical tool for identifying potential IP infringements. Fortnite has previously struggled with users importing unauthorized content from popular franchises, such as Mario Kart and Shrek. This acquisition signals a proactive move by Epic to better police the content within its platforms.

Integration Across the Epic Ecosystem

Epic Games confirmed that Loci’s AI technology will be deployed across its entire suite of tools. This includes the Unreal Editor for Fortnite (UEFN) and Fab, the company’s centralized marketplace for buying and selling digital assets. While the acquisition of the Loci platform has been announced, the specific financial terms of the deal remain undisclosed.
