The Philosophy Behind the Legend

Jin Fujisawa, who served as the scenario writer and director for both Dragon Quest 9 and Dragon Quest 10, shared insights into his long-term partnership with series icon Yuji Horii. According to Fujisawa, Horii consistently emphasized that “Dragon Quest isn’t about the scenario.” While this might seem counterintuitive for a JRPG franchise, Horii’s approach was rooted in a player-first methodology.

Fujisawa recalled how Horii would drill into him that the storyline is secondary to the player’s journey. Instead of prioritizing a rigid plot, the team was encouraged to define the specific experience they wanted the player to undergo. Fujisawa cited the marriage mechanic in Dragon Quest 5 as a prime example; by focusing on the weight of the player’s choice in selecting a partner, a unique and personal story naturally emerges for every individual.

Surprise as an Emotional Catalyst

Beyond narrative structure, Fujisawa highlighted Horii’s commitment to innovation and subversion. Horii is described as a creator constantly seeking to craft experiences that defy expectations, aiming to make players question what is possible within the game world.

Fujisawa noted that while young developers often prioritize making players cry, Horii understands that eliciting emotion through genuine surprise is a far more challenging and rewarding endeavor. For Horii, this element of surprise is the true driver of player happiness and engagement.

The Future of the Franchise

The series currently faces a period of transition and anticipation. Dragon Quest 12 remains largely under wraps, with Horii previously stating his intent for the title to serve as a tribute to two late developers. Additionally, Square Enix underwent a leadership reshuffle regarding the Dragon Quest brand in 2024, which may have impacted the project’s development timeline.

Despite these changes, Yuji Horii remains deeply committed to the series’ legacy. He has expressed a desire to oversee the franchise’s direction for the foreseeable future, with the ambitious goal of reaching the series’ 50th anniversary in 2036.
