WWE 2K23 delivers a refined wrestling experience that builds upon the successful foundation of last year’s re-debut. While it avoids reinventing the wheel, the game offers meaningful quality-of-life improvements, a deeper roster, and a more polished overall package, proving that the series remains on a positive trajectory despite some lingering technical hurdles.
Refined Controls and Gameplay Mechanics
Control-wise, 2K23 maintains the revamped setup introduced in the previous entry but feels significantly smoother. However, legacy frustrations persist, particularly regarding the finicky nature of picking up weapons. The combat system still relies on a guessing game for reversals, which can feel repetitive; a universal counter system would be a welcome change given the precision required for timing. On the positive side, a new accessibility feature allows players to choose between button-mashing or the classic “stop the needle” minigame for escaping pinfalls.
WarGames and The Showcase Mode
The highly anticipated WarGames match type makes its debut, faithfully capturing the chaotic spirit of the real-life spectacle. Beyond this, the game features a more robust tutorial to help both new and returning players master the nuances of combat. The documentary-style Showcase mode also returns, this time centering on John Cena. Instead of celebrating his victories, players relive Cena’s career through his most iconic losses. While the format remains largely the same—completing objectives to unlock era-specific content—the narration provides a unique perspective. It is, however, a missed opportunity that the mode lacks in-match commentary during historical footage, and the mandatory, repetitive soundtrack cannot be disabled.
Deepening the Experience: MyRise, MyGM, and Creation Tools
MyRise shines this year with two distinct, choice-driven campaigns that balance humor with inside jokes for dedicated fans. While the gameplay loop of navigating backstage interactions remains identical to last year, the narrative quality is a significant step up. MyGM also sees improvements, adding new match types, additional GMs, and season modifiers that increase replayability. Meanwhile, the creation suite remains a standout feature; with improved face-mapping and easier access to community-created content, the ability to customize arenas, entrances, and superstars continues to be a highlight for creative players.
The Online Play Struggle
Despite the improvements in single-player modes, the online experience is currently a major disappointment. During early access and at launch, matches were plagued by frequent disconnections, often forcing human opponents to be replaced by A.I. mid-match. This instability remains a critical issue that requires urgent patching to ensure a functional competitive environment.
A Solid, If Formulaic, Follow-Up
WWE 2K23 is technically a stronger, more complete package than its predecessor. It lacks the explosive novelty that accompanied the series’ return last year, making this entry feel somewhat more formulaic. Nevertheless, for fans of the franchise, 2K23 serves as a respectful and enjoyable “greatest hits” collection that continues to move the series in the right direction.
