Resident Evil Requiem director Koshi Nakanishi has confirmed that Leon Kennedy’s future in the franchise remains wide open, suggesting the iconic protagonist could continue fighting zombies well into his senior years.

Defying the Aging Process in Resident Evil

Addressing concerns that Resident Evil Requiem might serve as a final farewell for Leon, Nakanishi clarified that the series does not adhere to strict aging rules. While Leon is approaching 50 in the latest installment, his physical prowess remains largely unaffected by the passing of time. Nakanishi explained to Eurogamer that the development team does not feel pressured to align character aging precisely with the game’s timeline or release schedule.

Capcom’s Stance on Legacy Characters

Despite the natural tendency for long-running franchises to rotate their cast, Capcom shows no intention of phasing out its most recognizable faces. Nakanishi noted that the company does not prioritize replacing veteran characters with younger alternatives. “We don’t really think of it in those terms,” he stated, emphasizing that the appeal of established figures like Leon remains a core pillar of the series.

The “Hot Unc” Factor

Leon’s enduring popularity has only grown with his latest appearance, with fans affectionately labeling him a “hot unc” following his reveal in Requiem. Nakanishi acknowledged this sentiment, affirming his belief that Leon is “really appealing in his current form.” The director went as far as to joke about the character’s longevity, adding, “Who knows, we could bring him back when he’s 70, and I’m sure he’ll still be a great character.”

Balancing New Blood and Familiar Faces

While the introduction of new protagonists is often vital for franchise sustainability, Resident Evil has successfully balanced its roster. Characters like Ethan Winters evolved into icons, while newcomers such as Grace have proven capable of holding their own alongside series veterans. Furthermore, the sporadic appearances of long-time favorites like Claire and Jill mean that the series retains a deep bench of potential leads should Capcom choose to revisit them in future titles.
