Nintendo has maintained a massive, internal document mapping out the complex Legend of Zelda timeline since at least 2003, though series creator Shigeru Miyamoto has long dismissed its overall significance to the development process.
The Secret Master Document
For years, fans debated the chronological order of the Zelda series, a mystery that wasn’t officially settled until the 2011 release of the Hyrule Historia. However, evidence suggests Nintendo held the answers in a private, comprehensive file long before the book’s publication. In a 2003 interview with the Swedish Superplay Magazine, Miyamoto revealed the company’s internal approach to the series’ continuity.
“For every Zelda game we tell a new story,” Miyamoto stated. “But we actually have an enormous document that explains how the game relates to the others, and binds them together. But to be honest, they are not that important to us. We care more about developing the game system.”
Prioritizing Gameplay Over Lore
While the 2011 Hyrule Historia eventually unveiled a timeline that branched the series into three distinct paths following the events of Ocarina of Time, Miyamoto’s stance remains clear: narrative complexity should never overshadow the player’s experience. He emphasized that the primary goal is to ensure players are immersed in the core mechanics of the game.
“The most important thing for me,” Miyamoto noted in the same 2003 interview, “is that the player get sucked into the game. I want the games to be easy to understand, and that the people appreciate the games content, its core. I will never deny the importance of a great story, but the plot should never get that important that it becomes unclear.”
Limited Access to the Zelda Timeline
Between the 2003 revelation and the eventual public disclosure of the timeline, Nintendo only hinted at the document’s existence. Series producer Eiji Aonuma confirmed in a 2010 interview that the master file was kept under tight wraps, noting that “the only people to have access to that document are myself, Mr. Miyamoto and the director of that title.”
Although the eventual unveiling of the official timeline provided clarity, some argue that the mystery surrounding the series’ connections was more compelling than the definitive answers provided later. Nevertheless, the enduring popularity of deep-dive lore breakdowns suggests that even details once deemed “unimportant” by creators can become a central pillar of engagement for a dedicated fan base.
