Helldivers 2 Lead Promises Major Fixes After Brutal Reddit AMA

Arrowhead’s creative lead Johan Pilestedt has pledged to implement “meaningful changes” to Helldivers 2 following a barrage of unfiltered player criticism during a recent Reddit AMA session, where he admitted that much of the community feedback was “painful to read.”

Addressing the Community’s Growing Frustrations

Pilestedt, who previously served as Arrowhead CEO, sought out raw feedback by hosting an “unfiltered” AMA on the r/HelldiversUnfiltered subreddit. The response was immediate and intense, with players demanding better communication and a deeper gameplay experience. In response to the community’s outcry, Pilestedt committed to a bi-weekly reporting cadence starting this week to keep players informed about the studio’s internal thoughts and progress.

The goal is to provide players with more substantial reasons to engage with the game beyond the typical warbond cycle. “You want underused equipment to have a purpose, long-term progression to feel worthwhile, and community actions to result in memorable moments again,” Pilestedt acknowledged.

The Challenge of Balancing Complexity

While the team faces significant pressure to address long-standing issues—such as the lack of utility for certain weapons and shallow progression systems—Pilestedt noted that Helldivers 2 is a “large, complicated game.” He maintained that while some problems are inherently difficult to solve, the current state of the game is not an excuse for stagnation.

“There is a lot of work that is in progress that we will see the fruits of in the coming weeks, months and year,” he stated. He emphasized that the feedback, however harsh, stems from a player base that deeply cares about the game’s long-term health and wants to see it remain special.

Skepticism Remains Among the Fanbase

Despite the outreach, a segment of the community remains wary of these promises. With Arrowhead having previously pledged “big steps forward” and better communication in 2025, some players expressed fatigue over recurring cycles of promises. Critics on Reddit pointed out that similar assurances have been made multiple times in the past without resulting in the desired shifts in game development.

Nevertheless, both the developers and the community find common ground in the intensity of the discourse. Pilestedt concluded the session by thanking those who participated constructively, even when their frustration was high, stating: “That means you still care.”

The studio continues to navigate these internal and external challenges, with leadership recently admitting that the team had previously “underinvested” in the game’s engine. Despite these setbacks, the commitment remains to prove that things can and will improve as the studio moves forward.
