Arc Raiders Devs Still Refining the PvP and PvE Balance

Embark Studios is still actively refining the balance between PvP and PvE in Arc Raiders, as design director Virgil Watkins confirms the team is learning how to harmonize these competing gameplay elements to create more impactful player interactions.

The Quest for the Perfect Gameplay Blend

The debate surrounding Arc Raiders and its multiplayer structure remains a constant focus for both the community and the development team. According to Watkins, finding the “holy grail” of gameplay balance is an ongoing process. Embark Studios acknowledges that merging PvP and PvE is a complex challenge, requiring constant adjustments to ensure the experience feels fair, rewarding, and consistent with the game’s core vision.

Despite the difficulty, Watkins believes the studio has succeeded in making PvE encounters feel significant. He notes that these elements now command as much respect—if not more—than human opponents. When PvE challenges are compelling, they inherently elevate the tension and impact of every player interaction.

Data-Driven Development and Community Feedback

Embark’s approach to these adjustments relies heavily on community feedback and observing real-world playstyles. By monitoring how users navigate the game, the studio continues to evolve the experience to better suit player expectations. The unpredictability inherent in combining AI encounters with human competition is viewed as both a primary design hurdle and a key strength of the title.

Flexibility and Emergent Gameplay

Watkins emphasizes that the game’s design prioritizes player agency, allowing individuals to choose whether to cooperate, avoid conflict, or engage in combat. This flexibility has been instrumental in fostering the emergent, player-driven stories observed within the game world. Recent updates have further supported this by introducing PvE hotspots, such as “Close Scrutiny Arc” salvos, and adjusting weapon durability to make gear scavenged from other players more valuable.

Looking toward the future, Watkins hopes that other studios will adopt similar design philosophies, as he is personally invested in the evolution of these “bendy” environments. For now, Embark Studios continues to refine its formula, viewing the development process as a long-term commitment to perfecting the interaction between its systems.
