FF14 Players Lose Adorable Otter Backpacks Due to Bug

Final Fantasy 14 players are mourning the loss of the popular Senor Otter Pack accessory after Square Enix announced it was distributed accidentally due to a configuration error following the release of patch 7.5 this week.

The Accidental Giveaway

The sudden appearance of the Senor Otter Pack in players’ inventories initially seemed like a generous surprise from the developers. However, Square Enix quickly clarified that the item was never intended to be released yet. The studio confirmed that the Senor Otter Pack was mistakenly assigned the same internal ID as the Black Embroidered Parasol fashion accessory, meaning players who unlocked the parasol were inadvertently gifted the otter backpack as well.

Square Enix’s Fix and Future Plans

The studio has confirmed that the Senor Otter Pack will be removed from player inventories in an upcoming hotfix. While the temporary access is ending, Square Enix assured fans that the item is not gone forever. It is scheduled to be released properly as a future reward—most likely during the annual Make It Rain event expected to launch next month. “We hope you will acquire the Senor Otter Pack again when it is released through the intended method,” the developers stated.

Community Reaction and Market Volatility

Despite the “tragedy” of losing the cute accessory, the community has largely taken the news in stride, flooding social media with memes and humorous tributes to their fleeting otter companions. However, the game’s economy has seen significant disruption. The Black Embroidered Parasol, which served as the key to the bugged item, saw its market price skyrocket from approximately 100,000 gil to several million gil on various servers.

Players are advised to exercise caution regarding these inflated market prices. Since the Senor Otter Pack is expected to become a standard, easily obtainable quest reward in the near future, the current panic-buying trend may result in unnecessary loss of in-game currency.

Yoshi-P hoped we wouldn’t notice, but Final Fantasy 14 Evercold is indeed inspired by Norse mythology.
