NetherRealm Studios is officially developing the next installment of the Mortal Kombat franchise, studio head Ed Boon confirmed, despite growing industry speculation regarding a potential Injustice 3.

Ed Boon Drops Hints on Future Projects
In a recent conversation with Collider, Ed Boon addressed the studio’s future, confirming that the team is actively working on another Mortal Kombat title. While Boon noted he could not provide specific details without facing internal consequences, he emphasized that the studio has multiple projects in development.
“We are actively pursuing – we’re definitely pursuing another Mortal Kombat game, and we’re definitely doing more as well,” Boon stated. “There’s a lot of pots on the stove. Not just with games, though, with other forms of media and whatnot. We’ve got a lot of great announcements that are coming.”
Breaking the Development Cycle
For years, NetherRealm maintained a consistent release pattern following the 2006 launch of Mortal Kombat: Armageddon. The studio traditionally alternated between its signature gory fighting games and T-rated comic book titles, such as the Injustice series and Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe.

This cycle shifted in 2023 when the studio released Mortal Kombat 1, a reboot that immediately followed Mortal Kombat 11, breaking the studio’s long-standing rhythm of alternating genres. Recent industry reports, including information surfaced from an artist’s resume, suggest that Injustice 3 is also in the works. However, the exact release order of these potential titles remains unconfirmed.
Looking Beyond the Console
While fans await the next entry in the video game series, the franchise continues to expand into other media. The sequel film Mortal Kombat 2 is currently in the works, with reports indicating that the film’s writers consulted directly with Ed Boon to ensure the inclusion of iconic fatalities and stages from the source material.
