After weeks of testing Valve’s new Steam Controller ahead of its May 4th release, I can confirm it is the best PC gamepad I’ve used in years, though its $100 price tag remains a point of contention. While the original 2015 model was a polarizing experiment, this updated version ditches the “weirdness” for a functional design that replicates the Steam Deck’s input versatility with seamless plug-and-play performance.
Design and Ergonomics: More Than Meets the Eye
Admittedly, the Steam Controller isn’t winning any beauty pageants. It looks somewhat bloated, packed with an array of buttons, pads, and sticks. However, the design serves a specific purpose: Valve aimed to mirror every input found on the Steam Deck. This ensures that any custom layout you’ve perfected on your handheld transitions perfectly to your desktop setup.
Though it felt strange at first, the grip becomes incredibly natural once you adjust to the four hidden rear buttons. These back inputs are game-changers, allowing for complex shortcuts that make navigation through dense menus—like those in Windrose—feel effortless.

The value proposition depends entirely on your gaming habits. If you are a casual player with a perfectly functional controller, the $100 price might be hard to swallow. Furthermore, this is strictly a PC peripheral; it offers no support for PS5, Xbox, or Switch consoles.
However, if you are a dedicated Steam Deck user who frequently docks your device, or a PC gamer looking for a seamless, highly customizable replacement for an Xbox controller, the Steam Controller is a fantastic investment. It is well-built, incredibly compatible, and designed to bridge the gap between console-like convenience and the deep customization of PC gaming.
