Unknown Worlds has officially confirmed that Subnautica 2 will launch in early access on May 14 across Steam, the Epic Games Store, and Xbox, where it will also be available via Game Pass.
Survival Amidst Chaos
“Driven from your home by ongoing conflict, Alterra offers you the chance at a new life,” the early access trailer description explains. “But as the colony ship CICADA shepherds you and your fellow Pioneers to your new home, something goes awry. The ship’s AI insists that your mission should continue. Stranded and faced with near-insurmountable odds, you must do everything in your power to survive. The future of humanity on this world is in your hands.”

The Publishing Situation
The announcement follows a period of intense legal friction between developer Unknown Worlds and its corporate owner, Krafton. The drama involved the ousting of the studio’s founders and the subsequent court-ordered reinstatement of CEO Ted Gill. Notably, Krafton is currently absent from the game’s store pages as the listed publisher.
Earlier this month, Krafton stated it was “focused on successfully supporting the Early Access launch of Subnautica 2,” but declined to provide further details regarding its publishing role. However, representatives from Unknown Worlds clarified to Eurogamer that the studio and Krafton are still operating as co-publishers for the title.
Early Access Roadmap
According to the official Steam listing, Subnautica 2 is expected to remain in early access for approximately two to three years. “We have a number of goals that we are adamantly working towards,” the developers noted. “We are focusing on delivering quality at a reasonable pace. At the end of the day, we’re dedicated to completing Subnautica 2 and making it the best game possible.”
The final release is slated to feature a significantly expanded scope, including additional biomes, creatures, items, and narrative content. While the highly anticipated co-op mode will be available on day one, the team intends to refine the technical and mechanical aspects of multiplayer throughout the early access period.
