Ubisoft Milan has successfully evolved the tactical formula of the 2017 hit Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle with its sequel, Sparks of Hope. By refining the core mechanics and introducing more fluid, dynamic gameplay, the studio has delivered a streamlined experience that retains deep strategic layers while offering a more engaging package for players.
Revolutionizing Tactical Movement
While the turn-based nature of the original remains, Sparks of Hope abandons the rigid grid-based movement system. Players now enjoy free-roaming control within a character’s movement range, making positioning feel far more kinetic and responsive. This freedom allows for creative offensive maneuvers, such as sprinting into foes, utilizing team jumps to gain elevation, and chaining multiple actions in a single turn. The result is a combat system that feels significantly more exciting and less constrained than its predecessor.
Dynamic Environments and Combat
The game’s colorful stages are more than just backdrops; they incorporate real-time elements that force players to adapt on the fly. Whether avoiding timed wind gusts or fleeing from exploding enemies, the integration of environmental hazards keeps the gameplay fresh. Missions also vary significantly, ranging from boss battles against rampaging Wigglers to environmental puzzles like restoring water flow by shattering dams with bombs.
The Power of Sparks
The titular Sparks—hybrids of Rabbids and Super Mario Galaxy’s Lumas—add a crucial layer of customization. By equipping these creatures, heroes gain elemental traits, unique powers, and utility perks. From turning characters invisible to unleashing meteor showers, the Sparks system encourages players to constantly rotate their loadouts to exploit enemy vulnerabilities, preventing the combat from becoming stagnant.
Refined Team Building and Skill Trees
Ubisoft has removed the previous restrictions on party composition, allowing players to build squads with any combination of heroes. Each character—from the long-ranged Luigi to the melee-focused Rabbid Mario—features a distinct skill tree that can be respec’d at any time. This flexibility, combined with the new roster additions like the blade-wielding Edge and the tank-like Bowser, makes team assembly a highlight of the experience.
Exploration and World-Building
Beyond the battlefield, Sparks of Hope features expansive, themed planets filled with sidequests, puzzles, and secrets. The addition of upgrades for Beep-0, such as a sonic pulse to shatter walls, introduces a light “Metroidvania” feel, encouraging players to revisit areas to unlock previously inaccessible zones. While some sidequests lean into repetitive “kill X-amount” objectives, the world-building and discovery elements provide a welcome change of pace from the tactical encounters.
Ultimately, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope is a stellar sequel. It honors the foundation laid by Kingdom Battle while introducing meaningful improvements that make it a superior game in every category. It is a charming, polished, and highly strategic adventure that stands out as a must-play title.
