Bungie released Marathon update 1.0.6.2 today, implementing critical map adjustments to the Cryo Archive to curb spawn-rushing tactics and introducing a recurring weekly gear drop to assist players.

Improving New Player Accessibility
The latest patch continues Bungie’s ongoing initiative to refine the notoriously punishing Marathon experience. By smoothing out specific friction points, the developer aims to provide a more forgiving environment for newer or less experienced players.
Weekly Gear Kits for All
One of the most requested features arrives with this update: players can now claim one free, Cryo Archive-exclusive sponsored kit every weekend. Each bundle includes a selection of blue-tier gear and essential healing items, providing a reliable baseline for runners as they venture deeper into the map.
Previously, this kit was only available as a one-time launch bonus. By making it a recurring weekly staple, Bungie is effectively lowering the barrier to entry, ensuring players have the necessary equipment to survive the initial stages of a match.

Combating Aggressive Spawn Rushing
Bungie has also taken direct action against the frustrating trend of teams invading spawn points within the first few minutes of a match. Developers have officially sealed off several common traversal routes that allowed high-skilled players to bypass security clearance requirements.
Previously, experienced runners utilized map vents to access restricted areas without needing to farm keys from UESC bots. This allowed them to reach spawn points prematurely and eliminate players who were still in the early stages of their progression. Bungie noted that they will continue to monitor map geometry to ensure that spawn points remain fair and balanced.
WSTR Shotgun Rebalance
Update 1.0.6.2 also features a significant rebalance for the WSTR shotgun, a weapon infamous for its lethality in the close-quarters hallways of the Cryo Archive. The base damage has been increased from 78 to 85, but the critical multiplier has been reduced from 1.15x to 1.05x. This change shifts the weapon’s utility toward consistent body shots.
Additionally, the WSTR now boasts a 75% damage bonus against AI targets. This adjustment should make clearing UESC bots significantly faster for players utilizing the weapon during their runs.
