After a seven-year absence, the iconic League of Legends Winter map is officially returning to Summoner’s Rift in 2025, with Riot Games confirming the comeback is a direct response to persistent community demand.

Why the Winter Map Disappeared
The last time players experienced the festive transformation of Summoner’s Rift was back in 2018. League of Legends executive producer Paul Bellezza addressed the lengthy hiatus in a recent reveal video, citing significant technical hurdles. According to Bellezza, the legacy “tech and tools” required substantial overhauls to support the seasonal map, leading to a long-standing pause in holiday-themed updates.
“Because You Really Asked for It”
During the announcement, Bellezza playfully acknowledged the global nature of the game, noting that while the Northern Hemisphere approaches winter, the Southern Hemisphere is currently in the midst of summer. Despite these seasonal discrepancies, he confirmed that the fan outcry was the primary catalyst for the decision: “Because you really asked for it, we’re just gonna do it anyway. Winter map is coming back, everyone.”

What to Expect in Patch 25.23
While specific details remain limited, the festive version of Summoner’s Rift is slated to arrive with patch 25.23 on November 19. Fans can expect a return to the classic holiday aesthetic, featuring iconic decorations such as seasonal lights, snowmen, wrapped presents, candy canes, snow globes, and the signature three-headed monsters. Historically, the Winter map has also been accompanied by holiday-themed skins, limited-time events, and exclusive seasonal rewards, though Riot has yet to confirm the full scope of this year’s offering.
