Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe on Nintendo Switch revitalizes the 2011 Wii classic with sharp HD visuals and substantial new content, cementing its status as the definitive version of this platforming masterpiece.
A Classic Adventure Reborn
The story kicks off when an interdimensional traveler named Magolor crash-lands on Planet Popstar. Kirby and his allies must embark on a quest to recover the scattered pieces of Magolor’s ship. Players navigate vibrant biomes in a traditional side-scrolling format, featuring drop-in/drop-out cooperative play for up to four people. While the core experience remains intact, the lack of online functionality in this remaster is a notable missed opportunity.
Mastering Copy Abilities
While players can choose between Meta Knight, King Dedede, and Bandana Waddle Dee, the game truly shines when everyone opts for Kirby. This allows every participant to utilize the expansive library of copy abilities. The original roster—including water, electricity, fire, and snow—is fully present, joined by two potent newcomers: Mecha and Sand. The Mecha ability, in particular, stands out for its satisfying array of lasers, blasters, and rockets.
Level Design and Accessibility
Stages are meticulously crafted to encourage experimentation with different powers. Although it can be frustrating to lack the specific ability required for a hidden collectible, the game provides helpful cues to guide players. For those finding the challenge too steep, the new Magolor Helper mode offers a safety net, providing health or rescue from pits. Conversely, the return of Extra Mode ensures seasoned veterans have access to tougher boss encounters and more demanding bonus stages.
The Magolor Epilogue and Expanded Content
The most significant additions to the Deluxe package revolve around Magolor himself. After completing the main campaign, players unlock the Magolor Epilogue, a narrative-driven mode where you regain his lost powers. The combat loop here is deeply rewarding; as you defeat enemies and maintain combos to earn magic orbs, you upgrade his arsenal, eventually wielding devastating bombs and black holes.
Merry Magoland: A Hub for Fun
Beyond the main story, Merry Magoland serves as a dedicated space for party-style gameplay. This mode collects various subgames from across the franchise’s history, including fan favorites like Bomb Rally and Samurai Kirby. A robust mission system tracks your progress, rewarding players with cosmetic masks that celebrate iconic characters from Kirby’s long-running history.
Kirby’s Return to Dream Land Deluxe succeeds as a polished remaster, successfully preserving the charm of the original while adding enough depth to stand proudly alongside modern hits like Kirby and the Forgotten Land.
